How to Upload an Index File to Your Website with FileZilla

Updated 1 min read

Updated: 28 September 2026 · Applies to: FileZilla Client 3.x

Your home page must be named index.html (or index.php) and placed in public_html so it opens at your domain.

Steps

  1. Connect to your account in FileZilla.
  2. In the right-hand (server) panel, open public_html.
  3. In the left-hand (local) panel, find the index.html file on your computer.
  4. Drag it to the right-hand panel, or right-click it and choose Upload. Choose Overwrite if FileZilla asks about an existing file.

Open your domain in a browser to check. If you still see an old page, clear your browser cache.

Tip: Upload images, CSS and other files the page uses as well, keeping the same folder structure as on your computer.
