Ask an engineer to check itThe Rules Behind the Numbers.
Plain rules of thumb, so you can see why a plan was chosen. Real needs vary with your software and peak hours.
Websites
About 1 GB of memory to start, plus 0.25 GB per site and 1 GB per 100,000 visitors a month. Small sites with modest traffic fit shared cPanel hosting.
Web apps and APIs
2 GB to start plus 1 GB per 50,000 visitors a month, and a core per 200,000 visitors.
Databases
Memory of about a quarter of the database size, so the busy part stays in RAM, three times the size in disk for growth and backups, and fast SSD or NVMe disks.
Containers
About half a core and 1 GB of memory for each container or service.
AI models
GPU memory for the model compressed to 4 bits (8B about 6 GB, 70B about 42 GB), plus room for the people using it at once; training needs about twice as much.
Choosing the type
Up to 8 cores and 32 GB of memory: a VPS. More than that, or very large or fast disks: a dedicated server. A model on your own hardware: a GPU server.
