Minecraft on a VPS
The Minecraft server is a free download from Mojang. Running it on a VPS instead of your own computer means it stays online around the clock, has a fixed public IP address, and doesn’t need port forwarding on a home router.
Since version 26.1, Minecraft: Java Edition needs Java 25, and since 26.3 new servers start with the allowlist switched on, so players can only join after you add them. Bedrock players (consoles, phones and Windows) need the separate Bedrock Dedicated Server.
Public Minecraft servers are frequent targets of DDoS attacks. Every Minecraft VPS runs in our USA data centre with DDoS protection, so an attack doesn’t knock your players offline. Want to compare with Realms or hosting at home? See how much a game server costs.
| Current Java Edition server | Version 26.3, needs Java 25 |
|---|---|
| Memory | Mojang’s example start command gives the server 4 GB; mods and more players need more |
| New servers | Allowlist on by default since 26.3 (white-list=true) |
| Bedrock Dedicated Server | Separate free download; Mojang lists 4 GB RAM and Ubuntu 22.04 or later |
