Radio Bandwidth Calculator

Find out how much data your SHOUTcast or Icecast stream uses and how fast a connection it needs. Set your bitrate, listeners and hours on air: the results update as you go.

Stream bitrate

The quality you broadcast at. Higher bitrates sound better and use more data.

128 kbps: the usual choice for music stations.

HOW IT WORKS

How Radio Bandwidth Is Calculated

Every listener receives your stream at its bitrate for as long as they listen. Multiply the three together and divide by 8 to turn bits into bytes.

Data = bitrate × listeners × seconds ÷ 8

Example: 128 kbps × 100 listeners × 86,400 seconds a day × 30 days ÷ 8 = 4.15 TB a month. The speed you need is bitrate × listeners: 128 kbps × 100 = 12.8 Mbps.

We use decimal units, the way bandwidth is billed: 1 kbps is 1,000 bits per second and 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Use your average listeners for monthly data and your peak listeners for network speed.

BITRATE GUIDE

Which Bitrate Should You Use?

Pick the lowest bitrate that sounds right for your content. Halving the bitrate halves the data.

32 to 64 kbps

Talk and speech

News, sport, talk shows and podcasts. Voice stays clear, and listeners on mobile data use very little.

96 to 128 kbps

Most music stations

The usual balance of sound and data. With AAC, 64 to 96 kbps often sounds as good as MP3 at 128 kbps.

192 to 320 kbps

High-quality music

For audiences on good connections who care about detail. Uses up to two and a half times the data of 128 kbps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about the plans, support and billing.

Multiply your bitrate by the number of listeners and the seconds they listen, then divide by 8 to get bytes. For example, 128 kbps × 100 listeners × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 = 5.76 GB for one hour. The calculator on this page does it for you, per day and per month.

About 57.6 MB per listener per hour, or 1.38 GB per listener for a full day. At 64 kbps it is half that (28.8 MB an hour), and at 320 kbps two and a half times as much (144 MB an hour).

In theory 100,000 kbps ÷ 128 kbps = 781 listeners at 128 kbps, or 1,562 at 64 kbps. Leave some headroom for network overhead and sudden peaks, and size your port for your busiest moment, not your average.

Average listeners give a realistic monthly data figure, because people tune in and out. Peak listeners tell you how fast a connection you need, because every listener at that moment needs your full bitrate.

kbps is kilobits per second, used for stream bitrates. KB/s is kilobytes per second. There are 8 bits in a byte, so a 128 kbps stream is 16 KB/s per listener.

At the same bitrate, AAC and MP3 use exactly the same data. AAC often sounds better at low bitrates, so you can choose a lower bitrate, such as 64 kbps AAC, and use less data for similar sound.

Each listener connects to one stream, so a second mount point only adds the data its own listeners use. A relay to another server adds one copy of the stream for as long as the relay runs.

It is an estimate that assumes the same number of listeners for the whole period. Real audiences rise and fall, so actual use is usually lower than the figure for your peak and higher than a quiet hour.

Unmetered means there is no monthly data cap: the port speed is the limit. Unlimited listeners means the plan sets no listener number. The fair use rules in our Acceptable Use Policy apply to shared services.

Enter your numbers above. Up to 10 GB of data a month, a shared Centova Cast, SonicPanel or AzuraCast plan is enough; shared radio hosting starts at $3 a month. Above 10 GB, choose an AzuraCast VPS, which includes 3 to 5 TB of data a month, or a dedicated AzuraCast, SonicPanel or Centova Cast server with an unmetered 500 Mbps or 1 Gbps port.
