How to Move Radio Stations Off WHMSonic to a New Server (SonicPanel or Centova Cast)

Updated 4 min read

Updated: 8 October 2026 · Applies to: WHMSonic servers (discontinued); SonicPanel 3.34 and Centova Cast 3.3.4 (from vendor documentation); inventory, backup and stream test commands tested on Debian 13 (procps, GNU tar 1.35, curl 8.14.1)

WHMSonic's own Transfer All Radios tool needed WHMSonic on the new server, and new WHMSonic installs are no longer possible (why, and what to install instead; what replaced WHMSonic). So you move each radio by hand: back up its settings, AutoDJ music and playlists on the old server, recreate it in SonicPanel or Centova Cast on the new server, upload the music, test, and then point listeners to the new server. Keep the old server running until the new streams are confirmed.

1. Make an inventory on the old server

The running streaming processes show which account each station belongs to and where its configuration file is:

ps -eo user,args | grep -E '[s]c_serv|[s]c_trans|[i]cecast|[l]iquidsoap'

On our Icecast test server this printed the user and the configuration file passed with -c:

icecast2 icecast2 -b -c /opt/radio/icecast.xml

From each configuration file, note the port, source (DJ) password, maximum listeners, bit rate, mount point and station name. If a station is listed in the Shoutcast directory, also copy its Authhash from your shoutcast.com account. Then find the music and its size:

find /home -name '*.mp3' -printf '%h\n' | sort | uniq -c
du -sh /home/*/

The first command counts MP3 files per folder, which shows where each station's AutoDJ library lives:

      1 /home/radio1/autodj/music
      3 /home/radio1/autodj/music/rock
      1 /home/radio2/media

Finally, list every place your listener links are published: website player, apps, directories and the encoder settings of live DJs.

2. Back up each station

cd / && tar -czf /root/radio1-backup.tar.gz home/radio1
tar -tzf /root/radio1-backup.tar.gz

The second command lists the archive, so you can see that configuration, playlists and music are inside. Download the archives to your computer over SFTP (using SFTP) before you cancel anything.

3. Choose the new panel and licence

  • SonicPanel comes from the WHMSonic developers. According to SonicPanel, it needs a clean AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux 9 or 10 server with no other control panel, so it cannot share the server with cPanel, and its licence must be active for the server's IP address before you install.
  • Centova Cast runs SHOUTcast and Icecast stations with AutoDJ and needs its own Centova licence. To move an existing one, see changing the licensed IP address.

Plan for a new licence for whichever panel you choose. A Centova Cast dedicated server from Ucartz includes the Centova licence.

4. Recreate the stations

Set the same station name, bit rate and source password where the panel allows it, and keep the old port and mount point if you can choose them, so only the server part of the listener link changes.

5. Test, then switch listeners

Test the new stream under its final hostname before you change DNS. curl's --resolve sends the request to the new server's IP address (here 127.0.0.1 in our test):

$ curl -sS -o /dev/null --max-time 3 --resolve radio.example.com:8000:127.0.0.1 \
    -w "%{http_code} %{content_type} %{size_download} bytes\n" http://radio.example.com:8000/live
curl: (28) Operation timed out after 3000 milliseconds with 85400 bytes received
200 audio/mpeg 85400 bytes
  • Listener links with a hostname follow the DNS change. Lower the record's TTL well before the move (by at least the current TTL), then point it to the new IP address.
  • Links with the old IP address, a changed port or a changed mount point stop working: update your website player, directory listings and apps yourself.
  • Live DJs need the new server address, port and password in their encoder.
  • Old server: leave it streaming until listeners have moved over, then cancel it.

Moving to Ucartz

Ucartz Shoutcast and Icecast hosting lets you choose Centova Cast or SonicPanel, and reseller hosting includes either panel. For help moving stations, open a support ticket; server management covers migrations.
