Updated: 8 October 2026 · Applies to: Ucartz client area (WHMCS 9) with the Virtualizor VPS panel, Linux KVM VPS
To reload (reinstall) the operating system on your VPS, open Services › My Services in the Ucartz client area, click the VPS, open Reinstall OS in the VPS panel on the service page, pick the operating system, set a new root password and click Reinstall. The VPS is wiped and comes back with a clean system a few minutes later, with the same IP addresses.
Before you start
- Everything on the disk is erased. The panel warns: "Existing data on VPS will be lost permanently." Download your files, databases and configuration first.
- Your IP addresses stay the same, so DNS records do not need to change.
- Note the new root password you set during the reinstall; you need it for the first SSH login.
Reinstall from the client area
- Log in to the Ucartz client area at https://www.ucartz.com/clients/.
- Open Services › My Services and click your VPS. The Virtualizor VPS panel is shown on the service page.
- Click Reinstall OS ("Reinstall the current OS or Install a new one").
- Choose the distribution and version.
- Enter the new root password and confirm it.
- If your VPS has more than one disk, the panel can format only the primary disk ("If checked, only the primary disk data will be deleted"). Tick it if you want to keep data on the other disks.
- Click Reinstall and confirm the warning. The panel shows "The OS reinstall process has been started in the background".
- Wait a few minutes, then log in over SSH as
rootwith the new password.
The same reinstall can be done from the Virtualizor panel directly; see How to Reload OS in Virtualizor.
First SSH login after the reinstall
A fresh system has new SSH host keys, so your computer warns that the remote host identification has changed. Remove the old key for the VPS address, then connect again:
$ ssh-keygen -R 203.0.113.10 # Host 203.0.113.10 found: line 2 /home/you/.ssh/known_hosts updated. Original contents retained as /home/you/.ssh/known_hosts.old $ ssh root@203.0.113.10
Replace 203.0.113.10 with your VPS IP. If you changed the SSH port before, it is back to 22 after a reinstall; see How to Connect to SSH on a Different Port to set it again. Then update the system packages before you install anything else.
Messages you may see
- "You have exceeded your OS reinstall limit. Please contact your administrator": your plan allows a limited number of reinstalls per month. Open a ticket from Support › Open Ticket and we will run it for you.
- "Reinstallation of OS is disabled by Admin" or "No OS(s) available for reinstall": open a ticket and tell us which operating system you need.
- "There was an error while reinstalling the OS": wait a few minutes and try once more; if it repeats, open a ticket with the time of the attempt.
Windows VPS
Windows Server on our Windows VPS plans is installed by our engineers, with the licence included. To reinstall Windows, open a ticket instead of using Reinstall OS. See Windows VPS.
Forgot the root password later?
You can reset it without reinstalling: see How to reset the password of your VPS through Virtualizor.
