If you were charged after cancelling a service, the usual reason is an automatic payment that is still active outside our billing system, most often a PayPal subscription. PayPal keeps sending a payment on each renewal date until the subscription itself is cancelled in PayPal; cancelling the service in our client area does not stop it. Cancel the automatic payment, then open a ticket with the payment date and transaction ID so we can check it.
Why it happens
- A PayPal subscription is still active. If you once chose PayPal's subscribe or automatic payment option, PayPal pays each renewal by itself. It does not know that you cancelled the service. See Understanding PayPal Subscriptions and Auto Payments for Ucartz.
- A saved card paid a renewal invoice. If you saved a card for automatic payments, it can be charged for a renewal invoice a few days before the due date.
- The renewal invoice already existed. Renewal invoices are created about a week before the due date. If the service was cancelled after that, the invoice was already open and an automatic payment could still pay it.
- Cancellation at the end of the billing period. With the cancellation type End of Billing Period, the service stays active until its due date. A payment for the next period made before then is taken as a renewal.
- It was a different item. Domains, add-ons and other services renew on their own. Cancelling a hosting plan does not cancel the domain registered with it. Check the invoice the payment belongs to.
What to do now
- Stop the automatic payment. In PayPal: open Settings › Payments › Manage automatic payments, select Ucartz and click Cancel. PayPal changes its menus from time to time; full steps are in How to Cancel a Recurring Payment in PayPal.
- Remove saved cards you no longer want charged: in the client area open Billing › Payment Methods and delete the card.
- Find the invoice that was paid: open Billing › My Invoices and look for the invoice dated around the payment. It shows which service or domain it was for.
- Open a ticket from Support › Open Ticket with the payment date, the amount and the transaction ID from PayPal or your bank. We check it and, as appropriate, add it to your account as credit or refund it under our Terms of Service.
Please contact us before opening a dispute or chargeback. Our terms allow us to suspend an account during a chargeback, and a ticket is usually the faster way to sort it out.
How to cancel so it does not happen again
- In the client area, open Services › My Services, click the service and choose Request Cancellation.
- Pick the Cancellation Type:
- Immediate: the service is suspended right away and terminated within 24 hours.
- End of Billing Period: the service runs until its due date and is then suspended and terminated.
- Do it before the renewal invoice is created (about a week before the due date) where you can.
- Cancel any PayPal subscription for the service and remove saved cards you do not want used.
- Download your files, databases and email first. After termination the data cannot be recovered.
Cancelling a PayPal subscription does not cancel the service, and cancelling the service does not cancel the PayPal subscription. To keep a service but stop automatic payments, cancel only the subscription and pay future invoices yourself from Billing › My Invoices. The payment options are explained in Payment Gateways Available at Ucartz.
