Updated: 28 September 2026 · Applies to: Joomla 6.1 and 5.4
Joomla is a free content management system. You can install it with Softaculous in cPanel, or manually as described here.
The current versions are Joomla 6.1 (needs PHP 8.3 or newer and MariaDB 10.4+/MySQL 8.0.13+) and Joomla 5.4 (PHP 8.1 or newer). New sites should use Joomla 6.
Install
- Create a MariaDB/MySQL database and user (in cPanel: Databases › Database Wizard).
- Download the Full Package (zip) from downloads.joomla.org.
- Upload it to your web folder (for example
public_html) and extract it there (cPanel: Files › File Manager, select the file, Extract). - Open your domain in the browser. The installer asks for the site name, the administrator account, and the database details (host
localhost, the database user, password and database name). - When it finishes, click Remove "installation" folder if it is shown, then log in to the administrator area at
/administrator.
After installation, switch on Search Engine Friendly URLs with URL rewriting in System › Global Configuration (rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess first) and enable HTTPS in the same place (Force HTTPS) once your SSL certificate is active.
Tip: On Ucartz cPanel hosting you can install many of these applications in a few clicks with Software › Softaculous Apps Installer, which also handles updates and backups.
