Should I keep a backup copy of my site on my computer?

Yes, always. Keep your own backups, separate from your hosting.

  • Our platform backups on shared hosting have a limited retention period and are not guaranteed. On VPS and dedicated servers, backups are your responsibility unless you add a backup service. (See our Terms of Service, section 5.)
  • A copy on your computer or in cloud storage protects you from mistakes, hacked sites and payment problems, not only server failures.

How

  • Download a full backup from cPanel (Files › Backup) every week or before big changes.
  • Or use a backup plugin for your CMS that sends copies to cloud storage.
  • Keep several versions, and test that a backup restores.

Our engineers can set up automated off-site backups for you as a paid task.
