Updated: 22 October 2026 · Applies to: cPanel and WHM version 108 and later (menu labels from cPanel's documentation for version 130 and later)
Roundcube is the only webmail client in current cPanel, so there is nothing left to choose between. SquirrelMail was removed in cPanel and WHM version 78 and Horde in version 108, and according to cPanel the replacement for both is Roundcube. If you still see an old guide that compares the three, it describes cPanel as it was before those versions.
What happened to SquirrelMail and Horde
These dates come from cPanel's own deprecation plan:
- SquirrelMail: deprecated in version 76 and removed in version 78. New installations of version 76 and later never included it.
- Horde: deprecated and removed in version 108. cPanel gives the reason that Horde relies on PHP 7.4, which reached end of life on 28 November 2022.
- Your data: according to cPanel, the server automatically migrates Horde calendars and contacts to Roundcube when it updates to version 108. Your email messages stay in the mailbox on the server, because the webmail client only displays them, so Roundcube shows the same folders and messages.
If a bookmark or old instruction still points to Horde or SquirrelMail, log in to webmail again and you land in Roundcube.
What Roundcube gives you
According to the Roundcube project, its main features include:
- Reading, writing, replying to and forwarding email, with HTML messages and attachments.
- Folders, including Junk and Trash, and marking messages as read or unread.
- An address book with contact groups and address completion while you type.
- Search across your messages and folders.
- Several sender identities (name and signature), spell checking and saved reply templates.
For calendars and long-term contact sync on a phone or desktop app, connect an email client by IMAP instead of relying on webmail. Our guide Steps to configure cPanel email account in Outlook 2016 via IMAP shows the settings.
How to open Roundcube in cPanel
You can reach webmail in two ways.
- Directly: open your domain followed by
/webmailin a browser and log in with the full email address and its password. According to cPanel, webmail runs on port 2096 over SSL (2095 without SSL), and the/webmailpath redirects you to the right port. Our article How to Access cPanel, WHM and Webmail (Login URLs) lists every login address. - From cPanel: log in to cPanel, open Email Accounts, and click Check Email next to the account. According to cPanel, a new window opens with that account in webmail.
Example address to type in the browser (replace example.com with your own domain):
https://example.com/webmail
How to create an email account for Roundcube
You need a mailbox before you can log in to webmail. In cPanel's Email Accounts screen (labels from cPanel's documentation for version 130 and later):
- Log in to cPanel and open Email Accounts.
- Click Create.
- If your account has more than one domain, choose the domain from the Domain menu.
- Type the part before the @ sign in Username.
- Under Password, choose Set password now. and type a strong password (or click Generate), or choose Send login link to alternate email address to let the user set it.
- Optionally set Storage Space to a limit or Unlimited, and tick Send welcome email with instructions to set up a mail client.
- Click Create.
The new account appears in the list, and you can open it with Check Email. For more detail, see How to add an email account in cPanel and How to use webmail from within cPanel?.
If webmail does not open
- Login fails: use the full email address as the username, not your cPanel username, and reset the mailbox password in Email Accounts if needed.
- Page times out: some office and public networks block ports 2095 and 2096. Try another network, or use an email app over IMAP.
- Old Horde or SquirrelMail link: remove the bookmark and use
/webmailinstead.
