Updated: 11 October 2026 · Applies to: CloudLinux OS with cPanel & WHM

On CloudLinux servers, the administrator can add a short note to each PHP version in PHP Selector, for example "Recommended" or "End of life", to guide users.

Steps (root)

  1. Create or edit the file name_modifier in the PHP version's folder, for example:
    echo "Recommended" > /opt/alt/php83/name_modifier
  2. Repeat for other versions (/opt/alt/php81/, /opt/alt/php74/ and so on).

The change applies straight away. Users see the text in brackets next to the version in Software › Select PHP Version, and administrators can check it with selectorctl --interpreter=php --summary.

Note: Keep the notes to a word or two so the drop-down list stays readable.
