mod_pagespeed was an Apache module from Google that rewrote pages on the fly: it combined and minified CSS and JavaScript, compressed images and set cache headers. You should know two things before installing it today:
- The project is no longer developed. Google handed PageSpeed to the Apache Software Foundation, and the Apache PageSpeed project was retired on 17 March 2023. It receives no fixes or security updates.
- cPanel's EasyApache 4 repository still offers the module as
ea-apache24-mod_pagespeed(version 1.14.36.1 on our AlmaLinux 9 test server), but it is the final release of an abandoned project.
For these reasons we no longer recommend installing it on production servers.
If you still use it
You can find the module in WHM under Software > EasyApache 4 > Customize > Apache Modules (mod_pagespeed). To remove it, deselect it there and provision the profile, or run dnf remove ea-apache24-mod_pagespeed. After removing it, test your sites: pages that relied on its rewriting may load differently.
Better ways to get the same results
- Compression: EasyApache 4 includes
mod_deflate(gzip) andmod_brotli; or use cPanel's NGINX reverse proxy, which serves static files and handles caching. - Browser caching: set
Cache-ControlorExpiresheaders for static files withmod_expiresin.htaccess. - CSS, JavaScript and images: optimise them in the application. For WordPress, a cache and optimisation plugin (for example LiteSpeed Cache on LiteSpeed servers, or a page cache plugin on Apache) combines and minifies files; convert images to WebP or AVIF when uploading.
- A CDN such as Cloudflare adds compression, caching and image optimisation in front of the server.
Measure before and after with Google's PageSpeed Insights (the online test, which is still maintained and unrelated to the retired module).
