Updated: 28 September 2026 · Applies to: cPanel & WHM 138 (WHM, root access)

The mbstring extension handles text in multibyte character sets (such as Hindi, Arabic or Chinese) and is required by many applications, including WordPress plugins and phpMyAdmin.

With WHM (EasyApache 4)

  1. Log in to WHM as root (https://your-server:2087).
  2. Open Software › EasyApache 4 and click Customize.
  3. Go to PHP Extensions, search for mbstring and switch on php-mbstring for each PHP version.
  4. Click Review and Provision.

From the command line

dnf install ea-php83-php-mbstring

Check with /opt/cpanel/ea-php83/root/usr/bin/php -m | grep mbstring. On CloudLinux, users can switch it on in Software › Select PHP Version.
