Updated: 28 September 2026 · Applies to: Webmin 2.670 on Ubuntu, Debian and AlmaLinux / Rocky Linux
Webmin publishes security and bug-fix releases regularly. If you installed Webmin from its repository (see How to install Webmin on Ubuntu, Debian and AlmaLinux (current version)?), you update it with the normal package manager, like every other package on the server. Webmin's documentation says to use your system's package manager to upgrade a package-installed Webmin, and not to download individual modules.
Check your version
In Webmin, the version is shown on the dashboard (System Information). From the command line:
cat /etc/webmin/version
Update Webmin
Ubuntu, Debian and Kali:
sudo apt update sudo apt install --only-upgrade webmin
AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, RHEL and Fedora:
sudo dnf upgrade webmin
Then check that it runs and open it in your browser:
sudo systemctl status webmin cat /etc/webmin/version
A normal update keeps your settings and users.
Update automatically with the system
Because Webmin comes from a repository, a general system update also updates it: sudo apt upgrade or sudo dnf upgrade. On Ubuntu and Debian you can turn on automatic security updates with the unattended-upgrades package.
Webmin was installed from a downloaded file
If you installed a downloaded .deb or .rpm and never added the repository, add it now with the script from How to install Webmin on Ubuntu, Debian and AlmaLinux (current version)? (step 1); after that the commands above work. Webmin also has an Upgrade Webmin function under Webmin › Webmin Configuration for installations that are not managed by a package manager.
Remove Webmin
Ubuntu, Debian and Kali:
sudo apt remove webmin
Use sudo apt purge webmin to delete its configuration files as well. AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, RHEL and Fedora:
sudo dnf remove webmin
Afterwards close port 10000 in the firewall (How to fix Webmin not opening on port 10000? shows the commands; use delete or remove instead of allow or add). Services that Webmin managed, such as your web server or firewall, keep running; only the panel is gone.
If the update fails
- Package is held back or the repository is unreachable: run
sudo apt update(orsudo dnf makecache) and read the error. The server must reach the repository. - Webmin does not start after the update: read
sudo journalctl -u webmin -n 30 --no-pagerand/var/webmin/miniserv.error. - The theme or a module looks broken: clear your browser cache, then reinstall the package:
sudo apt install --reinstall webminorsudo dnf reinstall webmin.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I update?
At least monthly, and at once when a security release is announced.
Do updates need a reboot?
No. Restarting the Webmin service is enough, and the package does it for you.
