Updated: 28 September 2026 · Applies to: Webmin 2.670 on Ubuntu, Debian and AlmaLinux / Rocky Linux

Webmin is a free web-based control panel for administering a Linux server: users, services, disks, firewall, cron jobs, web server, DNS and much more, from your browser instead of the command line. This guide installs the current Webmin from its official repository on Ubuntu, Debian or AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. It replaces the old guides for CentOS 7 and Ubuntu 18.04, which are no longer supported systems.

Before you start

  • Root access or a user with sudo.
  • A supported and tested system: Red Hat Enterprise Linux and its derivatives (AlmaLinux, Rocky, Oracle, CentOS Stream), Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu or Kali.
  • Port 10000 must be reachable in your firewall (step 4).

1. Add the Webmin repository

Webmin provides a script that sets up its repository and signing key. The repository makes installing and later updating a normal package operation:

curl -o webmin-setup-repo.sh https://raw.githubusercontent.com/webmin/webmin/master/webmin-setup-repo.sh
sudo sh webmin-setup-repo.sh

Answer y if the script asks to set up the repository. On a minimal system install curl first (sudo apt install -y curl or sudo dnf install -y curl).

2. Install Webmin

Ubuntu, Debian and Kali:

sudo apt-get install webmin --install-recommends

AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, RHEL and Fedora:

sudo dnf install webmin

3. Check that it runs

sudo systemctl status webmin

The service must be active (running). It starts automatically after a reboot.

4. Open port 10000

Ubuntu or Debian with ufw (allow SSH first so that you do not lock yourself out):

sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw allow 10000/tcp

AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux and RHEL with firewalld:

sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port=10000/tcp
sudo firewall-cmd --reload

Also allow the port in any firewall of your provider in front of the server. For better security allow only your own IP address instead of the whole internet, see How to change the Webmin port and allow only your IP address?.

5. Log in

  1. Open https://YOUR-SERVER-IP:10000 in your browser.
  2. Your browser warns about the certificate. That is normal: Webmin creates its own certificate, which no certificate authority has signed. The connection is still encrypted. To remove the warning, install a real certificate: How to secure Webmin with a Let's Encrypt SSL certificate?.
  3. Log in as root with the server's root password. If root has no password on your system (common on Ubuntu images), set a Webmin password for root first: sudo webmin passwd --user root --webmin-only. See How to reset the Webmin root password from the command line?.

If it does not work

Install from a downloaded package (not recommended)

Webmin advises against manual installation. If you cannot use the repository, download the .deb or .rpm from webmin.com/download and install it with sudo apt-get install --install-recommends ./webmin-current.deb or sudo dnf install ./webmin-current.rpm. You then have to update it by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Which version does this install?
The current release from Webmin's repository, 2.670 when this article was written.

Can Webmin run next to cPanel?
We advise against it. cPanel and Webmin both change the same services and configuration files, so use one panel per server.

Do you offer a server with Webmin ready?
Yes, see the managed Webmin VPS below.
