Updated: 28 September 2026 · Applies to: Webmin 2.670 on Ubuntu, Debian and AlmaLinux / Rocky Linux

Webmin listens on port 10000 and uses HTTPS. If https://YOUR-SERVER-IP:10000 does not open, the cause is almost always one of four things: Webmin is not running, a firewall blocks the port, you used http:// instead of https://, or Webmin listens on another port. Check them in this order from an SSH session.

1. Is Webmin running?

sudo systemctl status webmin

If it is not active (running), start it and read why it stopped:

sudo systemctl start webmin
sudo journalctl -u webmin -n 30 --no-pager

Also see /var/webmin/miniserv.error for Webmin's own log.

2. Which port does it use?

sudo ss -ltnp | grep miniserv

Webmin's web server is called miniserv. The line shows the address and port, normally 0.0.0.0:10000. If the port is different, someone changed it (How to change the Webmin port and allow only your IP address?). Use that port in the address. If the line shows 127.0.0.1, Webmin only accepts connections from the server itself.

3. Test from the server itself

curl -k -I https://127.0.0.1:10000

Any HTTP answer (for example HTTP/1.1 200 or a redirect to a login page) means Webmin works, and the problem is the network or firewall between you and the server. The option -k accepts Webmin's self-signed certificate.

4. Firewall on the server

Ubuntu or Debian (ufw):

sudo ufw status
sudo ufw allow 10000/tcp

AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, RHEL (firewalld):

sudo firewall-cmd --list-ports
sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port=10000/tcp
sudo firewall-cmd --reload

If you use CSF or iptables directly, allow TCP port 10000 there.

5. Firewall outside the server

Your provider or your office may filter port 10000. Test from another network (for example your phone's mobile data). If it opens there, the filter is on your side; if you cannot fix it, use an SSH tunnel:

ssh -L 10000:127.0.0.1:10000 user@YOUR-SERVER-IP

Then open https://127.0.0.1:10000 in your browser.

6. Webmin restricts who can connect

Webmin can allow only listed IP addresses ("IP Access Control"). If your address is not listed, the connection is refused or closed. Undo it from the server: edit /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf, remove the line beginning with allow=, and run sudo systemctl restart webmin. Check the file first with sudo grep -E '^(port|allow|deny)=' /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf.

7. You see a certificate warning

That is not an error. Webmin's own certificate is not signed by a certificate authority; the connection is encrypted anyway. Continue through the warning, or install a real certificate: How to secure Webmin with a Let's Encrypt SSL certificate?.

Login problems

If the page opens but the login fails, see How to reset the Webmin root password from the command line?.

Frequently asked questions

I get "This site can't provide a secure connection" or an SSL protocol error.
You probably used http://. Use https://.

It worked yesterday.
Check systemctl status webmin and whether the server was rebooted with a firewall that starts without your rule (sudo ufw status).
