When you move to a new domain, send visitors and search engines from the old one with a permanent (301) redirect, so they arrive on the same page at the new address.
Steps in cPanel
- Keep the old domain registered and pointed to your hosting, and add it in Domains › Domains (as an alias of the main domain is fine).
- Open Domains › Redirects.
- Choose Permanent (301) and select the old domain.
- In Redirects to, enter the new address, for example
https://www.newdomain.com/. - Choose Redirect with or without www., tick Wild Card Redirect so every page goes to the same page on the new domain, and click Add.
With .htaccess
In the old domain's folder:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www\.)?olddomain\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]
Tip: Keep the redirect and the old domain for at least a year. In Google Search Console, use the Change of Address tool to tell Google about the move.
