Updated: 29 September 2026 · Applies to: cPanel & WHM 138 (Jupiter theme), Mailing Lists (GNU Mailman)

A mailing list gives a group one address, such as members@example.com. A message sent to it goes to everyone on the list. cPanel's Mailing Lists feature uses GNU Mailman and is still part of cPanel 138 (it moved to Python 3 in cPanel 126). Use it for announcements to members, customers or a team, and for discussion groups.

Create a mailing list

  1. Log in to cPanel and open Email › Mailing Lists.
  2. Enter the List Name. It may contain letters, numbers, underscores, dots and dashes, but no spaces.
  3. Choose the Domain.
  4. Enter a password twice, or use the Password Generator. This is the list administrator password; keep it safe.
  5. Choose the access type:
    • Private: the administrator approves every subscription, and the list is not shown in Mailman's public list overview.
    • Public: anyone can subscribe, and the list is shown publicly.
  6. Click Add. The list appears under Current Lists.

Add members

  1. Under Current Lists, click Manage next to the list. The Mailman administration page opens; log in with the list password.
  2. Open Membership Management › Mass Subscriptions.
  3. Paste the addresses, one per line.
  4. Choose whether to subscribe the addresses now or invite them (they confirm by email), and whether to send welcome messages. Only subscribe people directly if they have agreed to receive the mail.
  5. Click Submit Your Changes.

The full list of members is under Membership Management › Membership List.

Let only you post (announcement or newsletter list)

By default, members can post to the whole list. For a one-way list:

  1. In the Mailman admin, open Privacy options › Sender filters.
  2. Set By default, should new list member postings be moderated? to Yes.
  3. In Membership Management › Membership List, turn on the mod flag for existing members too.

Messages from moderated members now wait for your approval, so only posts you approve go out.

Other options in cPanel

  • Change Password: set a new list administrator password.
  • Delegation: let other cPanel email users manage the list.
  • Delete: permanently removes the list.

Mailing list or newsletter tool?

Mailman is good for member lists, team announcements and discussions. For marketing newsletters to large audiences, a dedicated newsletter service is usually better: it adds unsubscribe links, sign-up forms, bounce handling and open statistics, and sends from its own servers rather than your hosting account. For your own sending server, see sending email from your own dedicated server: a checklist.

Mail sent through a list uses your domain, so make sure SPF and DKIM are set up: see cPanel Email Deliverability: SPF and DKIM.
