If an XFS file system in /etc/fstab has the noacl option, it fails to mount, and at boot the server may stop in emergency mode. The kernel log shows the reason:
mount: /data: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/vdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error. xfs: Unknown parameter 'noacl'
Why it happens
XFS has no mount option to turn off POSIX access control lists (ACLs). When the kernel is built with XFS ACL support (CONFIG_XFS_POSIX_ACL=y, as in the AlmaLinux 10 and Ubuntu 24.04 kernels we checked), ACLs are always available. acl and noacl are options of other file systems, such as ext4. On older kernels (for example CentOS 7) a remount with noacl was silently accepted, which made it look like the option worked. Current kernels reject it for both mount and remount. We checked this with kernel 6.12:
mount -o noacl /dev/loop6 /mnt/x # fails: Unknown parameter 'noacl' mount -o remount,noacl /mnt/x # fails as well
Fix
- Remove
noaclfrom the line in/etc/fstab. For example, changeUUID=0b3f... /data xfs defaults,noacl 0 0
toUUID=0b3f... /data xfs defaults 0 0
- Reload systemd and mount it:
systemctl daemon-reload mount /data
- Check:
findmnt /datashows the file system and its options.
If the server already stopped in emergency mode because of this line, log in with the root password at the console, fix /etc/fstab the same way, and reboot. Note that findmnt --verify does not catch unknown mount options, so always test an edited line with mount before rebooting.
If you do not want ACLs to be used
ACLs have no effect until someone sets them with setfacl. To see whether any file has one, look for a + after the permissions in ls -l, or list them with getfacl -R -s /data. Remove unwanted ACLs with setfacl -b file, or setfacl -R -b /data for a whole tree.
For file systems that are not critical for booting, add nofail to their options, so a mistake in the line does not stop the server from starting.
