Applies to: cPanel hosting (cPanel & WHM 138), VPS and dedicated servers on Linux or Windows
You need your server's IP address to point a domain to it, to connect by SSH, FTP or Remote Desktop, or to allow it through a firewall. This guide shows where to find it for each type of service, how to look up the IP address behind any website, and how to tell where a server is located.
1. In the Ucartz client area
- Log in to the client area and open Services › My Services.
- Click the service.
- For a VPS or dedicated server, the details show the Primary IP and, if you have more, the Assigned IPs. For a hosting account, find the IP address in cPanel (next section).
2. In cPanel (hosting accounts)
- Log in to cPanel.
- On the home page, look at the General Information panel. It shows Shared IP Address (the server's address, used by several accounts) or Dedicated IP Address if your account has its own IP.
- For more detail, click Server Information in the same panel.
On shared hosting, point your domain's A record to the shared IP address, and always use your domain name (not the IP) to open your website: the server needs the name to know which site to show.
3. On the server itself (VPS or dedicated)
Linux, over SSH:
ip -4 -brief address # addresses on each network adapter hostname -I # the same, in one line curl -4 https://ipinfo.io/ip # the public IPv4 address the internet sees
Windows Server, in PowerShell:
ipconfig (Invoke-RestMethod https://ipinfo.io/ip)
If the address on the adapter starts with 10., 172.16. to 172.31. or 192.168., it is a private address behind NAT; the public one is what the last command shows.
4. The IP address behind a website
nslookup example.com dig +short example.com A # Linux and macOS
ping example.com also shows the address it resolves to. If the domain uses a proxy or CDN such as Cloudflare, these commands show the proxy's addresses, not your server's. In that case, take the server IP from the client area or cPanel as above.
5. Where is the server located?
- Your Ucartz service: the location is part of the plan you ordered (for example, our KVM VPS plans are in the USA), and a dedicated server stays in the location chosen at order time (see dedicated server locations and IP address rules). If your plan doesn't show a location, ask our support team.
- Any IP address: an IP lookup shows the country, city and network owner:
curl https://ipinfo.io/203.0.113.10
These results come from databases and are sometimes wrong, especially for newly assigned addresses, so a lookup can show a different city from the real data centre. - Distance from your users: what really matters for speed is the network delay.
pingshows the round-trip time in milliseconds, andmtrortraceroute(tracerton Windows) shows the route.
