A Certificate Signing Request (CSR) contains the details that go into your SSL certificate. For most certificates we sell, the CSR is created for you during setup; you only need one yourself if you install the certificate on your own server.

Details you need

  • Common Name: the exact domain to secure, for example www.example.com. Most certificates also cover the name without www. For a wildcard certificate, use *.example.com.
  • Organisation and Organisational Unit: your company and department (for DV certificates you can use your name or domain).
  • City, State (written in full) and Country (two-letter code, such as IN or US).
  • Email address for the certificate contact.

For organisation-validated (OV) and extended-validation (EV) certificates, the company details must match official registration records.

Create a CSR

  • cPanel: Security › SSL/TLS › Generate, view, or delete SSL certificate signing requests.
  • Linux server: openssl req -new -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -keyout example.com.key -out example.com.csr

Note: Keep the private key (.key) safe and never send it to anyone, including us. You only submit the CSR.
