If yum crashes with "Segmentation fault", a common cause is a copy of libz or libxml2 compiled from source and installed in /usr/local/lib/, which yum then loads instead of the system library.

Fix (root)

  1. Look for them: ls /usr/local/lib/ | grep -E "libz|libxml2"
  2. Move them out of the way (do not delete until you know nothing needs them):
    mkdir /root/usr-local-lib-backup
    mv /usr/local/lib/libz* /usr/local/lib/libxml2* /root/usr-local-lib-backup/
    ldconfig
  3. Run yum again.
