Browsers keep copies of pages, images and scripts so that sites load faster. After a website changes, the old copies can make you see an old version, a broken layout or a login that keeps failing. Clearing the cache fixes that. These steps follow Google, Apple, Microsoft and Mozilla’s own help pages.

Quickest: reload one page without the cache

  • Chrome, Edge and Firefox: Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows and Linux, Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac.
  • Chrome and Edge with developer tools open (F12): right-click the reload button and choose Empty cache and hard reload.

Chrome (computer)

  1. Click More (three dots, top right) › Delete browsing data, or press Ctrl+Shift+Delete.
  2. Choose a time range, such as Last hour or All time.
  3. Tick Cached images and files. Untick Cookies and other site data if you don’t want to be signed out of websites.
  4. Click Delete data.

Chrome on Android

  1. Tap More (three dots, right of the address bar) › Delete browsing data.
  2. Choose a time range, tap More options and tick Cached images and files.
  3. Tap Delete data.

Safari on iPhone and iPad

  • Everything (history, cache and cookies): Settings › Apps › Safari › Clear History and Website Data, choose the time frame and tap Clear History.
  • Keep your history, remove cache and cookies: Settings › Apps › Safari › Advanced › Website Data › Remove All Website Data › Remove Now.

Safari on Mac

  • One site: Safari › Settings › Privacy › Manage Website Data, select the site and click Remove.
  • Cache only: turn on Safari › Settings › Advanced › Show features for web developers, then choose Develop › Empty Caches.
  • Everything: History › Clear History.

Firefox

  1. Open the menu › Settings › Privacy & Security.
  2. Under Cookies and Site Data, click Clear Data….
  3. Choose the time range, tick only Temporary cached files and pages and click Clear.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Settings and more (three dots) › Settings › Privacy, search, and services.
  2. Under Clear browsing data, click Choose what to clear.
  3. Choose a Time range, tick Cached images and files and click Clear now.

Still seeing the old version?

  • The page may be cached on the server or CDN: clear your WordPress caching plugin or purge the cache in Cloudflare.
  • After a DNS change, your computer may still use the old address: flush the DNS cache.
  • Try a private window: if it works there, the problem is data stored in your normal browser profile.

Official documentation: Google Chrome, Safari on iPhone, Microsoft Edge.
