Applies to: WordPress 7.1 block editor (Gutenberg)

WordPress has a built-in Table block, so you don’t need a plugin for simple tables such as price lists, opening hours or comparisons.

Add a table

  1. Edit the post or page, click the + (block inserter) and search for Table, or type /table on a new line and press Enter.
  2. Enter the number of columns and rows and click Create Table.
  3. Click into the cells and type. Press Tab to move to the next cell.

Change it

  • Add or delete rows and columns: click a cell, then use the Edit table button in the block toolbar.
  • Header and footer rows: in the block settings sidebar, turn on Header section or Footer section.
  • Column widths: Fixed width table cells makes all columns equal; leave it off on phones so columns fit their content.
  • Style: choose Default or Stripes in the sidebar.
  • Caption: click Add caption in the toolbar.

Paste a table from a spreadsheet or website

Copy the cells in Excel, Google Sheets or from a web page and paste them into an empty paragraph block; WordPress usually turns them into a Table block automatically.

Tips

  • Keep tables to a few short columns so they are readable on phones; wide tables become hard to use on small screens.
  • Don’t use a table for page layout; use the Columns block instead.
  • For sortable or searchable tables with many rows, a table plugin is the better tool.
