Updated: 11 October 2026 · Applies to: Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 12, AlmaLinux 9 and Rocky Linux 9 (htop 3.3)

htop is an interactive process viewer: a friendlier top with colours, scrolling, mouse support and a process tree. The current version is 3.x (3.3 in the distribution packages).

Install

dnf install epel-release && dnf install htop # AlmaLinux / Rocky
apt install htop # Ubuntu / Debian

Use it

Run htop. The top shows CPU cores, memory and swap bars, load average and uptime; below is the process list.

Useful keys

  • F3 or /: search for a process.
  • F4 or \: filter the list.
  • F5 or t: tree view (which process started which).
  • F6: choose the sort column (for example memory).
  • F9 or k: send a signal (15 = stop politely, 9 = kill).
  • u: show one user's processes.
  • F2: settings (columns, meters).
  • F10 or q: quit.

Tip: btop (also in EPEL and Ubuntu) is a newer alternative with graphs for CPU, memory, disks and network.
