Updated: 28 September 2026 · Applies to: any Linux terminal with curl (Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux and others); Newsboat 2.36 and later
Cricket-CLI was a small Python program that showed live cricket scores in the terminal. It is no longer maintained: its last release on PyPI is a beta from December 2017, and tools that scrape score websites break when those sites change. You can still follow live scores from the command line with ESPNcricinfo's public live-scores RSS feed, which we checked on 28 September 2026: it returned the matches in progress, updated every few minutes.
Quick look with curl
curl -s https://static.cricinfo.com/rss/livescores.xml | grep -o '<title>[^<]*' | sed 's/<title>//' | tail -n +2
This prints one line per match, for example India Under-19s 383/8 * v Australia Under-19s 217/10. An asterisk marks the team currently batting.
Refresh it every minute with watch:
watch -n 60 "curl -s https://static.cricinfo.com/rss/livescores.xml | grep -o '<title>[^<]*' | sed 's/<title>//' | tail -n +2"
In a terminal feed reader
Add the feed to Newsboat, a text-mode RSS reader (see Newsboat: an RSS and Atom feed reader for the terminal):
echo 'https://static.cricinfo.com/rss/livescores.xml "cricket"' >> ~/.newsboat/urls newsboat
Press R to reload. Each match is an item; opening it with o goes to the full scorecard in your browser.
Notes
- The feed belongs to ESPNcricinfo and is meant for personal use. Poll it gently (once a minute is plenty) and do not republish it.
- If the old Cricket-CLI is still installed on a system, remove it with
pip uninstall cricket-cli; it depends on an outdated Python setup.
