Everything Regarding Windows Update Errors

Updated 2 min read

Updated: 22 October 2026 · Applies to: Windows 10 (historical reference; Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025)

Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025 (Microsoft's own lifecycle page). Since that date, Microsoft no longer provides technical support, feature updates, or quality updates (including security and reliability fixes) for Windows 10. The specific update bugs listed below are kept as historical reference; none of them get a fix from Microsoft going forward, since Windows 10 no longer receives quality updates at all.

Microsoft's paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) program lets a device keep receiving security updates past end of support, for consumers and for organizations on different terms. ESU explicitly does not include new features, nonsecurity updates, design changes, or general bug fixes, according to Microsoft's own ESU documentation, so it would not have addressed any of the specific update bugs below even while Windows 10 was still in mainstream support; ESU only continues security patching. For most people, Microsoft's own recommendation is to move to Windows 11, Windows 365, or a new Windows 11 device rather than rely on Windows 10 past end of support.

Historical: update problems reported on specific Windows 10 versions

  • Version 2004: an issue with Conexant ISST audio drivers during or after updating.
  • Version 1903: the Camera app failing to start after updating.
  • Version 1809: files going missing from users' Documents folders after updating.
  • Version 1709: shifted or misaligned output when printing after updating.

Historical: problems that affected Windows Update more broadly

  • Updates failing to install with error 0x80073701.
  • A blue screen crash after installing an update.
  • Intermittent loss of Wi-Fi connectivity after an update.

These were all specific to the Windows 10 versions and update cycles named above; none of this is something to troubleshoot on a currently supported version of Windows.
