Does cPanel Support IMAP Protocol? Introduction
IMAP is a mail protocol that lets you sync messages in real time across multiple devices.
cPanel uses the Dovecot mail server to provide both IMAP and POP3 services.
In this article, you will learn how to verify IMAP support in cPanel, configure your email client, and troubleshoot common issues.
Prerequisites
Before you begin:
- A cPanel account with email services enabled
- WHM access (for server admins) or help from your hosting provider
- An email client that supports IMAP (for example Outlook, Thunderbird, or Apple Mail)
1. Verify IMAP Service in WHM
1. Log in to WHM.
2. Navigate to Service Configuration → Service Manager.
3. Ensure dovecot is checked and set to start at boot.
4. Click Save if you make changes.
2. Default IMAP Ports
By default cPanel/Dovecot listens on:
- 143 for IMAP (insecure)
- 993 for IMAPS (SSL/TLS)
Make sure your server firewall allows these ports.
3. Email Client Configuration
Use these settings in your mail app:
- Incoming Server: mail.yourdomain.com
- Protocol: IMAP
- Port: 993 (SSL/TLS) or 143 (no encryption)
- Username: your full email address
- Password: your email account password
4. Secure SSL Connections
cPanel issues SSL certificates via AutoSSL.
In cPanel’s Email Accounts → Connect Devices, you can copy the recommended secure settings for IMAPS.
5. Troubleshooting IMAP
If you cannot connect:
- Check that Dovecot is running:
systemctl status dovecot - Ensure ports 993 and 143 are open in your firewall.
- Inspect mail logs for errors:
tail -n 50 /var/log/maillog
Conclusion
cPanel fully supports the IMAP protocol via Dovecot.
By verifying the service in WHM, configuring your mail client with the correct ports, and using SSL, you can keep your email in sync across all devices.
