Updated: 8 October 2026 · Applies to: Centova Cast v3 (current release 3.3.4, from Centova documentation); stream name behaviour tested with Icecast 2.4.4 on Debian 13
In Centova Cast v3, the station name that listeners' players show is the Stream title. Change it under Configuration > Settings > Stream tab, click Update, then stop and start the stream so the streaming server and AutoDJ pick up the new name. Listeners see it the next time their player connects. On Icecast streams, a name set on a mount point can take priority, so check your mount points as well (below).
This article used to refer to Centova Cast v2. Centova discontinued v2 in November 2014 (no updates, fixes or support since), so the steps here are for v3. If your panel still runs v2, ask your provider about moving to v3.
Change the stream title
- Log in to your Centova Cast control panel with the address from your welcome email (often a link ending in
:2199). - In the menu on the left, under Configuration, click Settings.
- Open the Stream tab if it is not already selected.
- Type the new name in Stream title. According to Centova, this is the title "displayed by listeners' media players when they tune into the stream".
- Click Update at the bottom of the page.
- Under Server in the menu, click Stop, then Start once it appears. Centova notes that Reload applies settings without disconnecting listeners, but not every change can be applied that way. Stopping disconnects everyone who is listening, so pick a quiet moment.
Icecast streams: check the mount point names
Icecast stations can have several mount points (/stream is the default), and each one can carry its own name:
- Mount point name on the mount's AutoDJ Settings tab: the title for a mount point that uses the AutoDJ. Centova says this is commonly the name of your station.
- Stream name on the mount's Metadata Overrides tab: a custom stream name for that mount point.
To edit them, open Settings, click the Mount Points tab, click the mount point in the list, change the name, save and restart the stream. In Icecast, a stream name set for the mount point replaces the name that the source (AutoDJ or a live DJ's encoder) sends. Our test, with a source sending "Old Station Name":
before (no name on the mount): icy-name:Old Station Name after adding a name to the mount: icy-name:New Station Name
Icecast applied the new name to new listeners as soon as its configuration was reloaded, even while the source stayed connected, and it stayed after the source reconnected with its old name.
SHOUTcast streams and live DJs
On SHOUTcast stations, the name comes from Stream title as above. When a live DJ connects, their encoder software sends its own details, so ask your DJs to use the same station name in their encoder settings.
SHOUTcast accounts also have a Server Overrides tab with Stream title format. According to Centova, it overrides the title a live DJ's software sends: plain text replaces it completely, and %s inserts the DJ's title. For example, Station XYZ: %s turns "Artist Foo - Album Bar" into "Station XYZ: Artist Foo - Album Bar", which keeps your station name in front of a live DJ's titles.
Why some listeners still see the old name
- They were already listening. The name is sent once, when the player connects. In our test, a listener that connected before the change kept
icy-name:New Station Name, while a listener that connected afterwards goticy-name:Newer Station Name. Stopping and starting the stream reconnects everyone. - Saved stations. Players and apps that stored your station in a favourites list may keep the old name until the listener updates or re-adds it.
- Directory listings refresh on their own schedule. See my station is not showing in the Shoutcast directory.
- It is the song title, not the station name. The now-playing text comes from your track metadata or the DJ's encoder. See my song title does not match the song playing.
Stream name, mount point and stream URL
The stream name is only a label, so changing it does not affect your listeners' links. The mount point path, such as /stream, is part of the stream URL: renaming it changes the address listeners use, so update your website player and directory listings if you do. See changing the mount point name in Centova Cast.
Ucartz radio hosting
On Ucartz Shoutcast and Icecast hosting you can change the stream title yourself in your Centova Cast panel. If a field is missing from your panel or the name does not change after a restart, open a support ticket with your stream username and the name you want.
