Updated: 8 October 2026 · Applies to: Centova Cast v3 (current release 3.3.4), according to Centova; password generator tested with OpenSSL 3.5 on Debian 13

You cannot recover the Centova Cast admin password, because Centova Cast never stores it in plain text. You can reset it, as long as you can still log in to the server as root over SSH: run /usr/local/centovacast/sbin/resetadminpassword, enter a new password twice, and log in as admin with the new password.

Reset the admin password

  1. Connect to the Centova Cast server over SSH as root (see connecting to your server with SSH, or SSH on a different port if your server does not use port 22):
    ssh root@your-server-ip
If root login over SSH is disabled on your server (see allowing or disabling root login over SSH), log in with your normal user and switch to root with sudo -i.
  2. Run the reset tool:
    /usr/local/centovacast/sbin/resetadminpassword
  3. When prompted, type the new password and type it again to confirm it.
  4. Open your Centova Cast login page (the same address you normally use) and log in with the username admin and the new password.

Use a long, unique password. To generate one on the server, run openssl rand -base64 18, which prints a random 24-character string each time. Store it in a password manager.

If the new password is still refused

  • Wait out the login lockout. Centova Cast protects against brute-force attempts: after a set number of failed logins within a set time, the account is locked for a number of minutes, and during that time even the correct password is refused. The limits are under Login failures in the admin server settings. Wait for the lockout to end, then try again.
  • Make sure Centova Cast is running. If the login page does not load at all, check the services as root with /usr/local/centovacast/centovacast status (see controlling Centova Cast through the terminal).

Change the admin password while logged in

If you know the current password and just want a new one, use the Change administrator password button at the bottom of the Server Settings page in the admin area. To avoid sharing the admin login at all, give each team member a staff account; Centova Cast lets you create staff accounts with their own passwords and a chosen set of permissions.

Client and reseller accounts

The reset tool only changes the admin account. For stream (client) accounts, according to Centova:

  • Use the Forgot password? link at the bottom of the login page and enter the email address on file for the account. Centova Cast emails reset instructions.
  • If you no longer have access to that email address, ask your hosting provider to change the password for you. The admin, or a staff member with the Edit accounts permission, can view and edit the settings of user and reseller accounts, which includes seeing their passwords.

If you use Ucartz Shoutcast and Icecast hosting or Shoutcast reseller hosting, you log in with your own client or reseller account, not as admin, so the reset tool does not apply. Try the Forgot password? link on the login page, or ask Ucartz as your hosting provider to reset the password.

No root access either?

The reset needs root on the server, so if you have lost the root password too, recover root access first through your server provider's console or rescue system, then run the reset tool. A Centova Cast dedicated server from Ucartz comes with full root access, so you can reset the admin password yourself at any time.
