On old systems using GRUB legacy, editing a boot entry with e can add random characters to the command line. This is usually caused by a missing splash image.

Fix (root)

In /boot/grub/grub.conf, comment out the splash image line:

#splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

Current systems use GRUB 2, which does not have this problem; change its settings in /etc/default/grub and regenerate the configuration.
