MX (mail exchanger) records tell other servers where to deliver email for your domain. Change them when your email is hosted somewhere other than your cPanel server, for example Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, or when you add a backup mail server.
Add an MX record
- Log in to cPanel (for example at
https://yourdomain.com:2083, or from the Ucartz client area). - Open Domains › Zone Editor and click Manage next to the domain.
- Click the arrow next to + Add Record and choose the MX record type. (Or click + MX Record next to the domain on the main page.)
- Enter the Priority and the Destination host from your email provider. Lower numbers are tried first.
- Click Save Record. Delete MX records that point to the old service, so all mail goes to one place.
Set email routing
Open Email › Email Routing, choose the domain, and pick:
- Local Mail Exchanger: this server receives the domain's mail.
- Remote Mail Exchanger: another service receives it. Mail sent from your website to your own address is then delivered there too.
- Backup Mail Exchanger: this server only holds mail when the main server is down.
- Automatically Detect Configuration: cPanel decides from the MX records.
Note: MX changes take effect as DNS caches expire, usually within a few hours. They only apply if your domain uses this server's nameservers.
