Live video does not. The open-source video servers are excellent and actively maintained, but none of them ships the multi-user panel, quotas and billing hooks a hosting provider needs to sell video streaming accounts. The commercial engines charge per server per month, and the cloud services charge for every minute or viewer-hour you deliver. That leaves small broadcasters, schools, churches and resellers with a real gap, and this article maps it out with current facts and prices.

The screenshot above is a lab test on our own test server, not a customer system: the open-source MediaMTX server (version 1.21.3) running on Debian 13, receiving a test stream over RTMP and serving it back as an HLS playlist. One small binary handled RTMP, SRT, WebRTC and HLS. What it does not give you is a panel to create customer accounts, set limits or bill anyone.

What a live video setup actually needs

Every live video service, from a church service to a sports channel, is built from the same five parts:

Ingest: the encoder (usually OBS Studio or a hardware encoder) sends the stream to the server over RTMP, SRT or WebRTC.

Transcoding: the server turns one high-quality stream into several qualities (adaptive bitrate), so viewers on slow connections still get a picture. This is the expensive part, because every rendition costs CPU or GPU time.

Delivery: viewers receive HLS (simple and cache-friendly), low-latency HLS, DASH or WebRTC (sub-second, but heavier per viewer).

A player that works in browsers and on phones.

A control panel: accounts, stream keys, bandwidth and viewer limits, recordings, statistics and, for a hosting provider, billing integration.

The open-source world covers the first four very well. The fifth is where the gap is.

The open-source servers, and what they leave out

All of these had a release in 2026, according to their official repositories:

SRS (Simple Realtime Server), MIT licence: RTMP, WebRTC (WHIP and WHEP), HLS, HTTP-FLV, SRT and DASH. It has an HTTP API rather than a customer panel.

MediaMTX, MIT licence: a ready-to-use, zero-dependency server and proxy for SRT, WebRTC, RTSP, RTMP, HLS and low-latency HLS. It converts between protocols automatically and supports authentication through its own users, an HTTP hook or JWT, but has no web panel.

OvenMediaEngine, AGPL-3.0 licence: built for sub-second latency, with WebRTC and low-latency HLS output and a built-in live transcoder for adaptive bitrate. Managed through a REST API.

Red5 (the open-source server), Apache 2.0 licence: a Java media server whose own README says it supports the RTMP protocol only. The modern protocols are in the commercial Red5 Pro.

Ant Media Server Community Edition, Apache 2.0 licence: according to Ant Media’s own comparison, the free edition has 8 to 12 seconds of latency, WebRTC ingest only with no WebRTC playback, no adaptive bitrate and no clustering, and low-latency HLS is a paid plugin.

MistServer still has an open-source edition (public domain, The Unlicense, in its official repository) alongside a commercial one.

Owncast, MIT licence: software for running your own live stream, with RTMP in and HLS out. It is made for a broadcaster running their own channel, not for a provider selling many.

PeerTube, AGPL-3.0 licence: a federated video platform with live streaming, user accounts, roles and per-user video quotas. It is the closest to multi-user, but it is a video platform, not a hosting panel, and it has no billing integration.

One classic option has gone quiet: nginx-rtmp-module, which many older tutorials still recommend, has had no tagged release since 2021 and no commit since December 2024 in its official repository, with more than a thousand open issues.

The commercial engines and what they cost

Prices below are from each vendor’s own pricing page, read on 3 November 2026. They change, so check the vendor before you buy.

Wowza Streaming Engine: $195 a month per instance, including 10 transcoded channels, then $25 per extra channel. Enterprise and perpetual licences are quoted on request. It supports RTMP, SRT, WebRTC, HLS, low-latency HLS and DASH, and has no multi-tenant panel of its own.

Flussonic Media Server: sold as a subscription or a perpetual licence. Flussonic’s current price page did not load when we checked, so ask Flussonic for today’s price.

Red5 Pro: priced per instance, not per minute or viewer. Developer Pro is $29.99 a month (up to 100 connections, no clustering), Startup $119 (adds adaptive bitrate and autoscaling), Growth Pro $299 (adds transcoding), Enterprise from $3,499.

Nimble Streamer (Softvelum): $50 a month per server through the WMSPanel web service, with the Live Transcoder another $50 a month. WMSPanel can give non-admin users their own view of statistics, but it is not a reseller panel with quotas and billing.

Ant Media Server Enterprise: $109 a month self-hosted ($89 a month on an annual plan), or a $2,799 perpetual licence plus yearly support.

These are good products, and for a business that streams every day the price is fair. The problem is scale in the other direction: someone running one channel on one small server pays a licence that can cost more than the server itself.

The cloud services charge for every viewer

Managed services take the servers away completely, and bill by usage instead (pricing models from each provider’s own pages, 3 November 2026):

Amazon IVS: hourly, for input and for every viewer-hour delivered.

Cloudflare Stream: per minute stored and per minute delivered; ingest and encoding are free.

Mux: per minute, with a monthly allowance of free delivery minutes.

Vimeo: a flat plan, with live streaming from the Advanced plan at $75 a month billed yearly.

Usage pricing is excellent for occasional events. For a station that is live every day, the bill grows with the audience, which is exactly what a growing broadcaster wants to avoid. The alternative is a server with a flat monthly price, where the cost does not grow with every viewer, though bandwidth and port speed set the limit.

Why low latency and multiple qualities cost more

Two things drive the cost of a video server, whatever software runs on it:

Transcoding. Each extra quality of each live stream is another encoder running. PeerTube’s documentation, for example, says every live runs its own FFmpeg process, so ten lives mean ten processes. Hardware encoders (NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync) cut the CPU load, which is why GPU servers matter for video.

Latency. Plain HLS is delivered as small files that any CDN can cache, at the cost of 20 seconds or more of delay. Low-latency HLS needs extra server and CDN features (Apple’s specification adds partial segments and blocking playlist requests). WebRTC brings delay under a second, but keeps a live connection open for every viewer, so it does not scale as cheaply as HLS.

The gap: no open, affordable video panel

Put those facts together and the gap is clear. Radio has AzuraCast: free, open source, multi-user and actively developed. Video has strong open-source engines, but we found no actively maintained open-source panel that lets a provider create customer accounts, set storage, bandwidth and viewer limits, and connect billing. The panels that do exist for providers are commercial.

Video control panels compared

These are the panels and management tools a provider can put in front of a video server today (from each vendor’s own pages, 3 November 2026):

VDO Panel (commercial): live and on-demand video, a player, 24/7 playlist channels, restreaming and reseller accounts. Low price. Drawbacks: stability, support and very little documentation (details below).

MediaCP (commercial): a hosting panel for audio and video with reseller management, white label and WHMCS integration. For video it works with its own engine or with Wowza, Flussonic or Nginx-RTMP, and it has a detailed public manual. Drawbacks: video prices are not shown on its pricing page (ask the vendor), and if you run it with Wowza or Flussonic, check their licence costs as well.

WMSPanel for Nimble Streamer (commercial, $50 a month per server): statistics and server control, with limited views for other users. Drawback: it is not a reseller panel with quotas and billing.

Wowza Streaming Engine Manager (included with Wowza): a web console for the person running the server. Drawback: no customer or reseller accounts.

PeerTube (open source): user accounts, roles and per-user video quotas. Drawback: it is a video platform, not a hosting panel, with no billing integration.

Open-source engines (SRS, MediaMTX, OvenMediaEngine): an HTTP or REST API only. Drawback: you build accounts, limits and billing yourself.

The budget option most providers reach for today is VDO Panel, a commercial panel that bundles live and on-demand video, a player, playlists for 24/7 channels, restreaming to YouTube and Facebook, and reseller accounts. Its price is the reason it exists in this market: compare it with Wowza at $195 a month for the licence alone, before you pay for a server. We offer it at Ucartz for exactly that reason, both as shared hosting and on dedicated servers with the licence included.

We also want to be honest about its drawbacks, from running it for our own customers:

Stability. We have had to work through bugs and crashes, some of which needed the vendor’s help to fix.

Vendor support. Responses have not always been as fast or as complete as a live service needs.

Documentation. This is our biggest concern. As of 3 November 2026, the vendor’s public documentation is three short pages (an overview, software requirements and future updates). There is no administrator manual, configuration reference or troubleshooting guide. Our engineers can run complex systems, but without a manual, fixing a fault in a closed product often means changing code or configuration with nothing to check it against, which is a risk on a live service.

Its future. With a small vendor and little documentation, we are watching the product’s direction closely.

Here is how those drawbacks affect us, and how we handle them. A crash or bug in the panel lands on our support desk first, because customers see it as their streaming service going down, whoever wrote the code. Without a manual, every fault takes longer to find, and a fix can mean editing the panel’s code or configuration directly, which a vendor update may later overwrite. So we:

back up the panel’s files and configuration before any change,

test a fix on a separate server first where we can,

report every bug to the vendor and keep our own notes of each fix, since there is no official reference to check against,

and tell customers plainly when a fault is the panel’s and needs the vendor.

So our advice is simple: VDO Panel is the right choice when the budget is tight and you can accept these limits, for example a church, school or small web TV channel. If maximum reliability matters more than price, look at the premium engines, and budget for their licences.

The business side: who pays for video streaming

The technology only matters because someone needs a stream. In our experience the buyers fall into a few clear groups, and each needs something different:

Churches and religious organisations: a weekly or daily service, live and then as a recording, often for members who cannot attend in person.

Schools, colleges and course creators: lectures, events and paid courses, where recordings and a private player matter as much as the live stream.

Local and web TV channels: a 24/7 channel built from a playlist, with live shows over the top.

Sports clubs and event organisers: matches, conferences and concerts, where the audience spikes for a few hours.

IPTV and OTT operators: many channels at once, with transcoding, recording (DVR) and players on phones and TVs.

A church with one service a week and an operator with fifty channels are both “video streaming customers”, but they need very different servers, and very different prices.

Reselling video streaming

Radio shows that reselling works: web designers, agencies and small hosting providers buy capacity in bulk and sell branded radio accounts to their own clients. Video has the same demand, and it is where the software gap hurts most. A reseller needs four things the open-source engines do not provide together:

White label: the reseller’s brand, player and hostnames, never the upstream provider’s.

Separate customer accounts with their own limits for channels, viewers, bandwidth and storage.

A panel the end customer can use without technical help: stream keys, recordings, playlists, statistics.

Billing integration, so a sale in WHMCS or a similar system creates and suspends accounts automatically.

Today that layer only comes from commercial panels, and its licence sits on top of the server cost, which squeezes the margin on small plans. An affordable, well-documented reseller panel for video is the piece the market is missing.

Simple streaming hosting and IPTV

For most first-time broadcasters, the right start is not a server at all. Shared video streaming hosting gives you one channel: you go live from OBS, viewers watch in the embedded player, and the broadcast is recorded. It costs a fraction of a dedicated server and needs no technical skills. When a station runs around the clock or adds channels, it moves to its own server.

IPTV and OTT are the other end of the scale: many channels, transcoding into several qualities, recording and playback on phones, browsers and smart TVs. This is where engines like Flussonic are built to work. One rule applies to every IPTV service: you may only stream content you own or are licensed to distribute. Rebroadcasting channels without permission is illegal in most countries and is prohibited by our Acceptable Use Policy, and providers may ask for proof of rights.

How to choose today

One channel, small budget, technical team: an open-source server such as MediaMTX or SRS on a VPS. You get modern protocols for the cost of the server, and you build accounts and limits yourself.

Sub-second latency: OvenMediaEngine (open source), or Red5 Pro if you want a vendor behind it.

A supported commercial engine for daily, professional streaming: Flussonic or Wowza on a dedicated server, so the licence cost is spread over real capacity.

Occasional events, no servers at all: a usage-priced cloud service.

Many customers on one panel, on a budget: a commercial panel is still the only ready-made choice. Test it carefully, check its documentation and support terms, and keep a migration plan.

Where Ucartz fits

We run streaming servers for broadcasters every day, so we see this gap first-hand, and we offer every step of the journey:

VDO Panel shared video streaming from $10 a month: one channel live from OBS, with recordings, the lowest-cost way to start.

VDO Panel dedicated servers from $105 a month with the VDO Panel licence included: 5 to unlimited channels, 24/7 playlist channels and reseller accounts, for web TV stations and resellers on a budget (with the drawbacks above).

MediaCP on request: if you prefer MediaCP for its documentation and its reseller tools, we can set it up for you on a dedicated server. It is not in our store, so open a ticket and we will quote it, including the MediaCP licence.

Flussonic streaming servers from $189 a month and Red5 streaming servers from $114 a month, for IPTV, OTT, transcoding, DVR and low latency, with a supported commercial engine.

An open-source server such as MediaMTX, SRS or OvenMediaEngine on a KVM VPS (from $10 a month) or a low-cost dedicated server (from $30 a month) with full root access, with no licence cost at all.

Every plan includes Free Basic Managed Support, and our engineers can install, tune and secure an open-source streaming stack as on-demand work.
