It can read account data and also create and edit accounts, through one WHM API token limited to that reseller’s own accounts, never root. For our first pilot client we switched on read-only access while we tested it.

Ucartz cPanel reseller hosting plans, where the MCP gateway is available on request.

At a glance

What it is: a remote MCP bridge server written in Python, built in-house by Ucartz, that turns plain-language requests into WHM API calls and returns the results to the AI assistant.

How assistants connect: over HTTPS, through the MCP Streamable HTTP endpoint or the older SSE and messages endpoints, so a browser-based assistant can connect without installing anything locally.

Who it is for: cPanel resellers who manage many customer accounts and want quick answers and changes without clicking through WHM.

Capabilities: read and write. Most of the day’s work is small and repetitive:

Which accounts are close to their disk or bandwidth limit?

What domains and subdomains sit on this account?

Is email set up for this customer’s domain?

Can you create an account for a new customer on the usual package?

Each one means logging in to WHM, finding the account and opening several screens. Our pilot client, a Ucartz reseller customer, asked a direct question: could an AI assistant handle these instead? That request started the project.

What we built: a scoped MCP gateway in front of WHM

The reseller asks their AI assistant a question or gives it a task. The assistant calls the Ucartz gateway over MCP on an HTTPS endpoint, and the gateway acts as a bridge: it calls the WHM API with one token that only covers that reseller’s accounts. Root access and other customers’ accounts stay out of reach.

The AI assistant reaches WHM only through the gateway and one scoped reseller token.

Why we built a remote MCP bridge: stdio, SSE and Streamable HTTP

An MCP server and an AI assistant can talk in three ways, and the choice decides where the assistant can run. According to the MCP specification, the current standard transports are stdio and Streamable HTTP, and the older HTTP with SSE transport is still supported for backwards compatibility.

MCP transport

How it connects

Where the assistant can run

stdio (standard input and output)

The AI client starts the MCP server as a local process and exchanges messages through standard input and output

On the same computer, for example Claude Code or Claude Desktop

HTTP with SSE (older, protocol 2024-11-05)

The client opens a Server-Sent Events stream and sends its messages to a separate messages endpoint

Anywhere on the internet, for clients that still use the older transport

Streamable HTTP (current)

One MCP endpoint over HTTPS: the client sends messages with POST, and the server can stream replies as SSE

Anywhere, including assistants that connect from a browser

cPanel and WHM 138 add native MCP support for MCP-aware AI tools. For our pilot client that was not enough: they wanted to use an assistant from the browser, and a local stdio server cannot be reached from there. Tools that bridge a local server to a remote one exist, but connecting a browser-based assistant through them is fiddly and depends on the user’s own computer staying online.

So we built the bridge on our side. The Ucartz gateway is a remote MCP server: it serves the Streamable HTTP endpoint and the older SSE and messages endpoints over HTTPS, and on the other side it talks to the WHM API. Any MCP-capable assistant that supports remote servers can connect to it with a URL, from any device, with nothing to install.

Remote MCP servers need care: the MCP specification asks HTTP servers to authenticate every connection and to validate the Origin header of incoming requests. Our gateway runs over HTTPS only, on its own server, and every request it makes to WHM uses the one scoped reseller token.

How to connect cPanel to Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or n8n

They all need the same thing from the hosting side: a remote MCP server URL reachable over public HTTPS. A local stdio server on your own computer cannot be used from web assistants or from an automation running on another server. With the Ucartz gateway, our team gives you that URL and the access details for your reseller account.

Claude (claude.ai on the web, Claude Desktop): according to Anthropic, open Settings, then Connectors, choose Add custom connector and paste the remote MCP server URL. On Team and Enterprise plans an owner adds it under Admin settings, then each member connects from their own Settings.

Claude Code (terminal): add the same URL as an HTTP server, for example
claude mcp add --transport http ucartz-whm https://mcp.example.com/mcp
.

ChatGPT: custom MCP connectors are added through developer mode in ChatGPT’s settings, with a name, a description and the server URL. Which plans can use it, and whether write actions are allowed, depends on the plan; check OpenAI’s current help pages.

Gemini CLI: according to Google’s Gemini CLI documentation, add the server under
mcpServers
in
settings.json
, with
httpUrl
for Streamable HTTP or
url
for SSE, or run
gemini mcp add --transport http ucartz-whm https://mcp.example.com/mcp
.

n8n: an AI Agent workflow can call a remote MCP server through an MCP client node, using the server’s Streamable HTTP or SSE URL. That lets an n8n workflow check accounts or create one when an order arrives.

Your own app or agent: the official MCP SDKs (for example Python and TypeScript) include remote HTTP clients, so a custom-built tool or chatbot can connect to the same endpoint.

The address
mcp.example.com
above is a placeholder; your real endpoint and credentials come from our team when we set the gateway up for your account. Once connected, ask the assistant something simple such as “List my cPanel accounts” to check the connection.

Design decisions and why we made them

The gateway can only do what its WHM token allows, so credential scope was the main design decision. Switching write access on or off is a change to the token’s privileges, not to the code.

Decision

What we did

Why

Read-only pilot

Write support is built; the pilot token allows lookups only

Hosting is live infrastructure; reads are proven with a real client before writes are switched on

Scoped token

One WHM API token for the client’s reseller account

The assistant sees that reseller’s accounts and nothing else on the server

No root access

The token is never root and never server-wide

A mistake or a leaked token cannot reach other customers

Own server

A dedicated VPS runs the gateway alone

Nothing else shares the machine that holds a client’s credentials

HTTPS only

No plain HTTP endpoint

Requests and answers are encrypted in transit

According to cPanel, WHM API tokens can be limited to a chosen set of privileges, which is what makes a reseller-only token possible.

Use cases: what a reseller can ask

Each row is a request a reseller types into their AI assistant. The gateway returns the WHM data or makes the change, and the assistant writes the answer.

Use case

Example request

Type

In the pilot

Quota watch

“Which of my accounts are above 80% of their disk quota?”

Read

On

Bandwidth check

“Who used the most bandwidth this month?”

Read

On

Account status

“Is the account for example.com active or suspended?”

Read

On

Domain inventory

“List the domains and subdomains on this account.”

Read

On

Email setup review

“Which email accounts exist for example.org?”

Read

On

Support prep

“Summarise this customer’s account before I reply to their ticket.”

Read

On

Account creation

“Create an account for example.net on the Starter package.”

Write

Built, off for the test

Account edits

“Change the contact email on the account for example.com.”

Write

Built, off for the test

Package changes

“Move this account to a bigger package.”

Write

Built, off for the test

Results so far

Build: one dedicated VPS and one scoped token, about 3 to 4 hours from an empty server to a hardened, tested gateway.

What the pilot uses: account status, disk and bandwidth usage, domain and subdomain lists, email account review and plain-language account summaries.

What it replaces: a WHM login and several screens per task become one request to the assistant.

Switched off for the test: write actions. Creating and editing accounts works through the gateway; the pilot token does not allow it, and write access is switched on when a client asks for it.

We have not yet measured time saved per reseller over a long period. We will share those figures once the pilot has run long enough to report them honestly.

How this relates to cPanel’s own AI features

cPanel added AI features in version 138, including an AI Assistant in the Meridian interface and native MCP support for MCP-aware AI tools. Our gateway is a separate, custom-built remote MCP server. cPanel’s built-in features work inside the panel or through MCP clients you set up yourself; the Ucartz gateway runs on its own server, offers HTTP endpoints that remote and browser-based assistants can reach, and limits access through one scoped reseller token. The two can be used side by side.

Availability by hosting plan

Plan

From (USD per month)

MCP and AI access

cPanel web hosting

$5.99

Not included

cPanel reseller hosting

$15.60

Reseller-level MCP gateway, on request

Managed dedicated server

$135

Server-wide AI automation and MCP, with full WHM and cPanel API access

Starting monthly prices from the Ucartz store; your order page shows the current price in your currency.

Frequently asked questions

What is an MCP server for cPanel?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants use outside tools. An MCP server for cPanel exposes WHM or cPanel API calls as tools, so an assistant can answer hosting questions and make changes with live data.

Can an AI assistant manage my cPanel reseller account?

Yes. Our gateway reads account data (usage, domains, email setup and status) and can also create and edit accounts. Write access is switched on per client.

Is it safe to connect an AI assistant to WHM?

The risk depends on the access you give it. Our gateway uses one token limited to your reseller account, on its own server, over HTTPS. It cannot reach other customers or the server as a whole, and write access is only switched on when you ask for it.

How do I connect cPanel with Claude on the web?

Claude on the web connects to remote MCP servers only, so you need one for your cPanel or WHM account, such as the Ucartz gateway. Add its URL in Claude under Settings, Connectors, Add custom connector, then ask Claude about your accounts.

Can I use ChatGPT, Gemini or n8n with cPanel?

Yes, if the assistant supports remote MCP servers. ChatGPT adds them as custom connectors in developer mode, Gemini CLI adds them in its settings file, and n8n calls them from an AI Agent workflow. All of them connect to the same Ucartz gateway URL as Claude.

Is there a remote MCP server for cPanel?

Ucartz runs one for its reseller clients. It is a remote MCP bridge for WHM and cPanel that serves Streamable HTTP and the older SSE and messages endpoints over HTTPS, so assistants can connect with a URL instead of running a local stdio server.

What is the difference between stdio, SSE and Streamable HTTP in MCP?

stdio runs the MCP server as a local process on the same computer as the AI client. HTTP with SSE is the older remote transport, with a stream endpoint and a separate messages endpoint. Streamable HTTP is the current remote transport: one HTTPS endpoint that accepts POST requests and can stream replies.

Which AI assistants work with it?

Any assistant that supports remote MCP servers over HTTP, such as Claude, ChatGPT (developer mode), Gemini CLI, n8n workflows and custom apps built on the MCP SDKs.

How do I get it?

It is available on request for Ucartz cPanel reseller plans. Open a ticket from the client area and our team will set it up for your account.

Takeaway

Connecting an AI assistant to live hosting does not have to be all or nothing. Running the gateway read-only on its own server, with a token limited to one reseller, let us prove the use case with a real client before switching on the write actions the gateway already supports.

Connect cPanel and WHM to Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini with a remote MCP server.
