Open <code>index.html<\/code> in your browser to test it, check it with an HTML validator, then upload the folder&#8217;s contents to your web host&#8217;s document root (<code>public_html<\/code> on cPanel hosting) and point your domain at the host. You do not need a framework or a paid editor. Antigravity is for people aged 18 or over; the steps on this page need no AI account at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you need<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A text editor.<\/strong> Any plain-text editor works. <a href=\"https:\/\/code.visualstudio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Visual Studio Code<\/a> is a popular choice and, according to its FAQ, free for private or commercial use. Avoid word processors: they add hidden formatting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A web browser<\/strong> to preview your pages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Web hosting and a domain name<\/strong> when you are ready to publish. Not needed while you build.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Set up the folders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MDN&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/Learn_web_development\/Getting_started\/Environment_setup\/Dealing_with_files\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">guide to dealing with files<\/a> suggests this structure, and it is a good one to copy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>my-website\/\n  index.html        your home page\n  contact.html      a second page\n  styles\/\n    style.css       colours, fonts and layout\n  images\/\n    bread.jpg       your pictures<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Name every file and folder in lowercase with hyphens instead of spaces: <code>about-us.html<\/code>, not <code>About Us.html<\/code>. Most web servers are case-sensitive, and spaces turn into <code>%20<\/code> in web addresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Write the home page<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Save this as <code>index.html<\/code>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>&lt;!doctype html&gt;\n&lt;html lang=\"en\"&gt;\n  &lt;head&gt;\n    &lt;meta charset=\"utf-8\"&gt;\n    &lt;meta name=\"viewport\" content=\"width=device-width, initial-scale=1\"&gt;\n    &lt;title&gt;Asha's Bakery | Fresh bread in Kollam&lt;\/title&gt;\n    &lt;meta name=\"description\" content=\"Fresh bread and cakes, baked every morning in Kollam.\"&gt;\n    &lt;link rel=\"stylesheet\" href=\"styles\/style.css\"&gt;\n  &lt;\/head&gt;\n  &lt;body&gt;\n    &lt;header&gt;\n      &lt;h1&gt;Asha's Bakery&lt;\/h1&gt;\n      &lt;nav&gt;\n        &lt;a href=\"index.html\"&gt;Home&lt;\/a&gt;\n        &lt;a href=\"contact.html\"&gt;Contact&lt;\/a&gt;\n      &lt;\/nav&gt;\n    &lt;\/header&gt;\n    &lt;main&gt;\n      &lt;h2&gt;Fresh bread every morning&lt;\/h2&gt;\n      &lt;p&gt;We bake bread, cakes and biscuits every day from 6 am.&lt;\/p&gt;\n      &lt;img src=\"images\/bread.jpg\" alt=\"A basket of fresh bread\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"&gt;\n    &lt;\/main&gt;\n    &lt;footer&gt;\n      &lt;p&gt;Open every day, 6 am to 8 pm.&lt;\/p&gt;\n    &lt;\/footer&gt;\n  &lt;\/body&gt;\n&lt;\/html&gt;<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What each part of the <code>&lt;head&gt;<\/code> does, following <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/Learn_web_development\/Getting_started\/Your_first_website\/Creating_the_content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MDN&#8217;s explanation<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><code>&lt;!doctype html&gt;<\/code> is a required first line that makes the browser treat the page correctly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>&lt;meta charset=\"utf-8\"&gt;<\/code> lets the page show characters from almost every written language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <code>viewport<\/code> line stops phones from drawing the page at desktop width and shrinking it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>&lt;title&gt;<\/code> is the text in the browser tab and in bookmarks. Google also uses it as one source for the title shown in search results and <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/appearance\/title-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">asks for descriptive, concise titles<\/a>, so give every page its own.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <code>&lt;link&gt;<\/code> line loads your stylesheet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <code>&lt;body&gt;<\/code>, <code>&lt;header&gt;<\/code>, <code>&lt;nav&gt;<\/code>, <code>&lt;main&gt;<\/code> and <code>&lt;footer&gt;<\/code> describe what each part of the page is for, which helps screen readers and search engines. Give every image an <code>alt<\/code> text that says what it shows, plus its <code>width<\/code> and <code>height<\/code> so the page does not jump while it loads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Add some style<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Save this as <code>styles\/style.css<\/code>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>body {\n  font-family: system-ui, sans-serif;\n  max-width: 60rem;\n  margin: 0 auto;\n  padding: 1rem;\n  line-height: 1.6;\n}\nnav a {\n  margin-right: 1rem;\n}\nimg {\n  max-width: 100%;\n  height: auto;\n}<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This keeps lines to a readable width, centres the page and stops images from spilling off small screens. Because all pages share one stylesheet, changing a colour here changes it everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Add a second page<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Copy <code>index.html<\/code> to <code>contact.html<\/code>, change the title and the content inside <code>&lt;main&gt;<\/code>, and keep the same header and navigation. The links use <em>relative<\/em> paths (<code>contact.html<\/code>, <code>styles\/style.css<\/code>), so they work on your computer and on the server alike. Never link to a path like <code>C:\\Users\\...<\/code> or <code>file:\/\/\/<\/code>: it only exists on your own computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5: Check your HTML<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Browsers forgive a lot of mistakes, so a page can look fine and still be broken for screen readers or search engines. Run it through the W3C&#8217;s Nu HTML Checker, either online or as the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/validator\/validator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open-source <code>vnu.jar<\/code><\/a>. Our sample files passed with no errors. When we removed the <code>alt<\/code> text from the image, version 26.9.27 of the checker reported:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>error: An \"img\" element must have an \"alt\" attribute, except under certain conditions.<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fix every error it lists, then open the page on your phone as well as on your computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 6: Put it online<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Get hosting and a domain.<\/strong> Any web hosting plan can serve plain HTML files.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Find the document root.<\/strong> On cPanel hosting it is <code>public_html<\/code>; the cPanel documentation calls it the web root (<code>\/home\/user\/public_html<\/code>). See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucartz.com\/clients\/knowledgebase\/403\/Where-do-I-upload-my-web-site.html\">where to upload your website<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Upload the contents of your folder<\/strong>, not the folder itself, so that <code>index.html<\/code> sits directly in <code>public_html<\/code>. Use cPanel&#8217;s File Manager or an FTP\/SFTP client: see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucartz.com\/clients\/knowledgebase\/7072\/How-to-Upload-an-Index-File-to-Your-Website-with-FileZilla.html\">how to upload an index file with FileZilla<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Point your domain at the host<\/strong> by setting its nameservers or A record. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucartz.com\/clients\/knowledgebase\/9289\/What-Is-a-Nameserver-How-to-Find-and-Change-Yours.html\">What a nameserver is and how to change it<\/a> explains both.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Turn on HTTPS<\/strong> with the SSL certificate your host provides, so visitors see the padlock.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why <code>index.html<\/code>? When someone visits <code>https:\/\/example.com\/<\/code>, the server looks for a default file in that folder. Apache&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/httpd.apache.org\/docs\/2.4\/mod\/mod_dir.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><code>DirectoryIndex<\/code><\/a> and nginx&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/nginx.org\/en\/docs\/http\/ngx_http_index_module.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><code>index<\/code><\/a> directive both default to <code>index.html<\/code>. To use a different home page file, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucartz.com\/clients\/knowledgebase\/2344\/How-to-set-home.html-page-as-homepage-in-place-of-index.html.html\">how to set home.html as the home page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common mistakes after uploading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We served the sample site from Linux containers running nginx 1.31.6 and Apache 2.4.68 to check these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Symptom<\/th><th>Likely cause<\/th><th>Fix<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>A link gives 404, but it worked on your computer<\/td><td>Capital letters: both servers returned 404 for <code>\/Contact.html<\/code> when the file was <code>contact.html<\/code>. Windows and macOS usually ignore case; Linux servers do not.<\/td><td>Use lowercase names everywhere<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>You see a list of files (Apache) or a 403 Forbidden page (nginx) instead of your site<\/td><td>No <code>index.html<\/code> in that folder, or it is named <code>Index.html<\/code><\/td><td>Rename to <code>index.html<\/code><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>The site only works at <code>\/my-website\/<\/code><\/td><td>You uploaded the folder instead of its contents<\/td><td>Move the files up into <code>public_html<\/code><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>The page has no styling<\/td><td>Wrong path to the CSS file<\/td><td>Check <code>href=\"styles\/style.css\"<\/code> matches the real path<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Images are broken<\/td><td>Wrong path or case, or the file was not uploaded<\/td><td>Open the image address directly in the browser<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Old version still showing<\/td><td>Browser cache<\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucartz.com\/clients\/knowledgebase\/9303\/How-to-Clear-Your-Browser-Cache-Chrome-Safari-Firefox-Edge-iPhone-and-Android.html\">Clear your browser cache<\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When plain HTML is enough, and when it is not<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What you have built is a <em>static site<\/em>: MDN defines it as one that returns the same content every time a page is requested. Static sites load fast, have no server-side code to keep patched and run on the smallest hosting plan. They suit portfolios, small business pages, landing pages and documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HTML alone cannot store form submissions, run a shop or let a non-technical colleague edit pages. For those you need something that runs on the server, such as PHP, or a content management system.
