It stays online around the clock, has its own public IP address, gives you root access to install mods and plugins, and lets you pay only for the memory your game needs. Hosting at home costs nothing extra and is fine for a few friends, but only if your connection accepts incoming players and you are happy to expose your home IP address. A dedicated game server is for large communities, several servers at once or heavy modpacks that need a whole machine.

A Minecraft 26.3 server on a VPS: started, set to port 25565, with the port open in the firewall.

The three options at a glance

At home

Gaming VPS

Dedicated game server

Online when

While your PC is on

24/7

24/7

Public IP and ports

Needs port forwarding; impossible behind carrier-grade NAT

Own IPv4 address, you open the ports

Own IPv4 addresses, you open the ports

Attacks on the server

Hit your home connection

Depends on the provider’s DDoS protection

Depends on the provider and plan

Resources

Shared with your own gaming

A fixed share of a physical host

The whole machine

Setup

You do everything

You, or the provider on request

You, with more hardware to look after

Best for

Testing, a few friends

Most community servers

Big communities, many servers, heavy mods

Money matters too, but prices change by game and plan. Our post on how much a game server costs lists what popular games need and what that costs. This article is about the other differences.

Hosting at home: what has to be true

The computer stays on. When you switch it off, the server is gone for everyone.

Players can reach you. Your router must forward the game’s port to your PC. A Minecraft Java server, for example, listens on TCP port 25565 by default: that is what
server.properties
contained when we generated it with the official 26.3 server. Our guide to opening port 25565 and port forwarding covers the router side.

You are not behind carrier-grade NAT. Some internet providers share one public IPv4 address between many customers. Then no port forwarding on your own router can make you reachable.

Your upload speed is enough. Every player receives game data from your connection, so check your upload speed, not just the download figure your plan is sold on.

You accept the exposure. Players connect to your home IP address. If someone attacks the server, your whole household can lose its internet connection. Our article on DDoS attacks explains how these work.

How to check for carrier-grade NAT

Open your router’s status page and note its WAN or internet IP address. Then ask the internet what address it sees:

curl -s https://ipinfo.io/ip

If the two addresses match, you have a public address and port forwarding can work. If the router shows an address from 100.64.0.0 to 100.127.255.255, you are behind carrier-grade NAT: that range is the shared address space set aside for it in RFC 6598. A different address in any other private range, such as 192.168.x.x, usually means a second router in front of yours.

What a gaming VPS server gives you

A gaming VPS is a virtual server in a data centre, set up for game servers. On a KVM VPS you get your own kernel, a fixed amount of RAM, CPU cores and disk, and a public IPv4 address, so none of the home problems above apply. With root access you can install any game server that runs on Linux, add mods and plugins, run a Discord bot next to it and keep several worlds on one machine if the memory allows. Our guide to hosting a game server on Linux with SteamCMD shows a typical install.

Two things are worth checking on any VPS:

DDoS protection. Public game servers can be targets of DDoS attacks, and a standard VPS does not always include protection. Ask whether it is included for game servers and whether you need to request it.

CPU steal time. Your VPS shares a physical host with others. If the host is busy, the hypervisor can hold your virtual CPU back, and the game lags even though your own CPU use looks normal. Linux reports this as steal time.

You can watch steal time while players are online:

vmstat 5 5

procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- -system-- -------cpu-------
r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa st gu
1 0 0 386532 616444 5550592 0 0 0 0 5033 5243 7 1 92 0 0 0

The
st
column is the percentage of time stolen from your virtual machine, as the vmstat manual puts it;
top
shows the same figure as
st
on its CPU line. This sample comes from our test system (procps-ng 4.0.4). Zero or close to it is what you want. If it stays high during play, ask your provider about it or move to a bigger plan or a dedicated server.

When a dedicated game server makes sense

A dedicated server gives you the whole physical machine: every core, all the memory and the disks, with no neighbours and no steal time. It makes sense when you run several busy servers, a big community or modpacks that need more memory than a VPS plan offers. The trade-offs are that delivery takes longer than an automated VPS, more of the setup is yours, and on a self-managed server the backups are yours too. For one small or medium server, a VPS is usually enough.

How to choose: a quick checklist

Where are your players? Pick a location close to most of them. Distance adds delay you cannot tune away: from a home connection in Kerala, we measured about 270 ms to a cloud endpoint in Virginia, USA, against 36 ms to one in Mumbai (TCP connect time, median of seven tries). Test with ping or mtr before you commit.

How much memory does the game need? Start from the developer’s own figures, then add room for mods, plugins and more players.

Is the server public? A private server for friends can use an allowlist. A server listed publicly should have DDoS protection.

How much time do you have? Updates, backups and restarts are regular work. Decide whether you do them or pay someone to.

Do you need a name instead of an IP address? For Minecraft, an SRV record lets players join with
play.example.com
; see how to add an SRV record.

Check the server from outside

When the game server is running, first confirm it is listening, on the server itself:

sudo ss -ltnp | grep 25565

Then test from another network, such as your phone’s mobile data or a different computer:

nc -vz -w 5 203.0.113.10 25565

Replace the address and port with yours. In our test, an open port printed
Connection to ... 25565 port [tcp/*] succeeded!
and a closed one
Connection refused
. A firewall that silently drops traffic makes nc wait: with
-w 5
it gave up after five seconds with
timed out
. This works for TCP games. For games that use UDP, such as Minecraft Bedrock, the simplest test is to join from the game on another network.

Game VPS at Ucartz

Our Game VPS plans are KVM servers in our USA game data centre with DDoS protection, NVMe SSD storage, unmetered bandwidth, one IPv4 address and full root access. After ordering, open a support ticket that says Game VPS and names your game: our team deploys the VPS in the DDoS-protected data centre and installs one game server with standard settings for free. Mods, several servers or moving an existing world are billed only for the time used, from $8 per 15 minutes. If you mainly run Minecraft, our Minecraft VPS page covers Java, Bedrock and modded setups, and our dedicated game servers are there when you outgrow a VPS.

Gaming VPS, dedicated game server or hosting at home?
