On a Linux VPS you install SteamCMD, create a separate user, download the server with its app ID, run it as a systemd service and open its ports in the firewall. SteamCMD and most game servers don&rsquo;t run on ARM.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enough RAM and disk for the game.<\/strong> In our test the Valheim server took 2.1 GB of disk and about 1.4 GB of RAM with a fresh world; Counter-Strike 2 needs about 65 GB of disk, Palworld recommends 16 GB of RAM. Some servers are Windows only, such as Enshrouded&rsquo;s.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Root or sudo access<\/strong>, and the game&rsquo;s UDP\/TCP ports allowed in the firewall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Install SteamCMD<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ubuntu and Debian<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SteamCMD is in Ubuntu&rsquo;s <em>multiverse<\/em> repository and needs 32-bit support:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>sudo add-apt-repository multiverse\nsudo dpkg --add-architecture i386\nsudo apt update\nsudo apt install steamcmd<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accept the Steam licence when asked. The command is then <code>\/usr\/games\/steamcmd<\/code>. (On Debian, enable the <code>non-free<\/code> component instead of multiverse.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Update the system first: in our test, installing the 32-bit libraries on a server with older packages failed with file conflicts until the system was updated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>sudo dnf upgrade\nsudo dnf install glibc.i686 libstdc++.i686 tar<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then download SteamCMD itself (next step) as the game user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Create a user for the game server<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never run a game server as root. Create a user and install everything in its home folder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>sudo useradd -m steam\nsudo -iu steam\nmkdir ~\/steamcmd &amp;&amp; cd ~\/steamcmd\ncurl -sSLO https:\/\/steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net\/client\/installer\/steamcmd_linux.tar.gz\ntar -xzf steamcmd_linux.tar.gz<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Ubuntu with the <code>steamcmd<\/code> package you can skip the download and use <code>\/usr\/games\/steamcmd<\/code> instead of <code>.\/steamcmd.sh<\/code> below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Download the game server<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>.\/steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir \/home\/steam\/valheim +login anonymous +app_update 896660 validate +quit<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SteamCMD updates itself on the first run, then downloads the server. It finishes with <code>Success! Check the game&rsquo;s server licence too: for example, the ARK: Survival Ascended server is licensed for personal use only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Start the server once<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Valheim ships a <code>start_server.sh<\/code> script. Copy it before editing, because updates overwrite it, and set your own server name, world name and password (at least 5 characters, not part of the server name):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>cd \/home\/steam\/valheim\ncp start_server.sh my_server.sh\nnano my_server.sh\n.\/my_server.sh<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stop it with <code>Ctrl+C<\/code>, which saves the world. Valheim keeps worlds in <code>~\/.config\/unity3d\/IronGate\/Valheim\/worlds_local\/<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5: Run it as a service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A systemd service starts the server at boot and restarts it if it crashes. Create <code>\/etc\/systemd\/system\/valheim.service<\/code>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>[Unit]\nDescription=Valheim dedicated server\nAfter=network-online.target\nWants=network-online.target\n\n[Service]\nUser=steam\nWorkingDirectory=\/home\/steam\/valheim\nEnvironment=LD_LIBRARY_PATH=\/home\/steam\/valheim\/linux64\nEnvironment=SteamAppId=892970\nExecStart=\/home\/steam\/valheim\/valheim_server.x86_64 -name \"My Server\" -port 2456 -world \"Dedicated\" -password \"ChangeMe123\" -public 0\nKillSignal=SIGINT\nTimeoutStopSec=60\nRestart=on-failure\n\n[Install]\nWantedBy=multi-user.target<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>sudo systemctl daemon-reload\nsudo systemctl enable --now valheim\njournalctl -u valheim -f          # watch the log<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>KillSignal=SIGINT<\/code> matters: it stops the server the same way as <code>Ctrl+C<\/code>, so the world is saved. In our test, <code>systemctl stop valheim<\/code> logged <code>World save (5\/5) done<\/code> before the server shut down. The log shows <code>Game server connected<\/code> when it is ready (about a minute on a small VPS). Set <code>-public 1<\/code> to list the server in the in-game community browser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 6: Open the ports<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code># AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux\nsudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port=2456-2458\/udp\nsudo firewall-cmd --reload\n\n# Ubuntu, Debian\nsudo ufw allow 2456:2458\/udp<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ports differ per game: check the game&rsquo;s server guide. Our test server listened on UDP 2457, the port after the game port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 7: Keep it updated and backed up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>sudo systemctl stop valheim\nsudo -iu steam ~\/steamcmd\/steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir \/home\/steam\/valheim +login anonymous +app_update 896660 validate +quit\nsudo systemctl start valheim<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Players usually need the same version as the server, so update after each game patch.
